One Small Act

"Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world." -Howard Zinn

I believe everyone has a deep desire to make an impact. What can hinder me from accomplishing this is the misconception that "I am only one person; how I could I possibly make an impact?" or this overwhelming feeling of "where do I even start?" because the needs of the world seem boundless. . .
Change around us requires action. We can each start with one small act. My one small act was deciding to use a national holiday to serve others. So I bought an air plane ticket to Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), India. I had heard about an opportunity to serve at the Richard Center for Hope (Divya Orphanage) and decided I could not pass it up. I went to serve 25 Indian boys, but all they wanted to do was serve me. I saw this immediately the first day we met as it came time for their lunch - they wanted to feed me from their own plates! The boys were more than thrilled to meet new friends to play and spend time with. Their desire for love and quality time outweighed even their desire for food. Spending this holiday with these boys helped me to see that everyone shares the same basic need and desire to be loved. This affirmed my life's purpose: to love, which I could accomplish daily with one small act.
There are over 7 billion people on this planet. If we followed Howard Zinn's advice and each accomplished one small act even a couple times a week, the impact would overwhelm the needs. So I encourage you all, let's start with one small act today.
